One of the greatest myths about alcoholics/addicts is that it is difficult to get them to seek help. I have found just the opposite. The trick is to have an enrolling conversation with them. I have never met an addict/alcoholic who secretly does not want help. Pride and fear of the unknown get in the way of someone taking action.
When you can have a conversation that speaks to the realities with compassion and understanding, and when that conversation offers hope and steps to take, the addict/alcoholic will respond. I have seen this happen time and time again. I believe it is important to not assume that your client doesn't want help or won't get help. The first step is to first get them to someone who knows that any intervention begins with an enrolling conversation!
